October 1st Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo will take office as the first woman to lead the National Executive, after the end of the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), but, Should she be called President or President? This is what the Royal Spanish Academy says (RAE) and the Mexican Academy of Language.
Claudia Sheinbaum is nowhere near being officially the Mexican president, however, before explaining what RAE says about ‘president’ we will explain its definitions.
The Language Academy points out these three concepts:
“1. m. and f. Person who presides. The oldest member will be the president of the meeting. The President of the Government will appoint new ministers.
2. m. and f. In a republic: Head of State. The summit is attended by the French president and prime minister.
3. f. colloq. President’s wife (→ 1, 2). “It would be good if even the president criticized the management of her excellent husband.”
Do you call yourself president or president?
It is true that we live in a society with low levels of acculturation and education, perhaps for this reason, one of the main doubts or public debates is What will be the official title of Claudia Sheinbaum? once you arrive at the National Palace.
According to the RAE article “Is she «the president» or «the president»?, currently It is ideal to use the feminine word to refer to the position occupied by a woman.
“Although «presidente» can be used as common in terms of gender («el/lapresident»), it is preferable today to use the feminine «presidenta», documented in Spanish since the 15th century and recorded in the academic dictionary since 1803.”
When performing the same query in the Mexican Academy of Language the same result was obtained, Currently preferable is to refer to Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo as ‘President’this, according to the article called “What is correct to say when a woman presides over an assembly: the president, the president or the president?”.
“It is recommended to say the president. It is correct to use the word president to refer to the ‘woman who presides’. In the past this word was most frequently used colloquially with the meaning of ‘wife of the president’. It was incorporated into the academic dictionary in 1803. It is currently registered with the following meanings: ‘woman who presides’, ‘president’ (‘head of a government, council, court, board, society, etc.’), ‘president’ (‘head of the State’) and , with colloquial use, ‘wife of the president’.”
