During a business forum, the PT member defended reviewing trade agreements and said that there was “distrust” between the Mexican business community and the Brazilian business community.
The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Monday (September 30, 2024) that Mexico should look more at countries in the Global South, such as Brazil, and less at the United States. During the Mexico-Brazil Business Forum, in Mexico City, the PT member defended reviewing trade agreements between the countries “as soon as possible”.
Lula stated that, in his previous governments, he did not understand why the Mexican business community looked with “distrust” at the Brazilian market, but he recognized the importance of the USA for the Mexican government. The PT member insisted on strengthening ties between the two largest economies in Latin America.

“[Empresários mexicanos] they will find out that there are many possibilities in a country called Brazil, with 200 million inhabitants and a GDP [Produto Interno Bruto] reasonably large and with a reasonable share in the economy. I even think that our trade agreements should be reviewed and redone as quickly as possible to improve life in Mexico and life in Brazil”, stated Lula.
The Brazilian president also praised the “unprecedented feat” of the election of Claudia Sheinbaum (National Regeneration Movement, center-left), the 1st woman to preside over Mexico.
