One was born online big controversy for the alleged censorship of the warrior of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remakewhich would be due to the usual woke culture. Basically the prosecution pointed the finger at the fact that the character would have been dressed in underwear, right there Akira Toriyama’s original design wanted him naked under the armour.
Censorship? Yes, from 2012
In reality, there was censorship, but certainly not in 2024. The redesign dates back to 2012that is, 12 years ago, on Nintendo 3DS. Furthermore, it was not necessarily due to its publication in the West, since it was made for Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland, remake of Dragon Quest Monsterswhich was released only in Japan.
So what was the warrior’s dressing due to? Certainly not to political controversy, as some would like, but to the simple necessity of obtain a “for all” evaluation of the CEROthe Japanese video game classification body (do you remember PEGI in Europe or the ESRB in the USA?)
In Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake the new design was maintained, with only one change: the color of the underwear, now brown instead of black.
The information comes from the Dragon Quest community, who wanted to respond to controversy fomented by an Asmongold videoin which the well-known influencer took advantage of alleged censorship to attack woke culture. Some also took a recent interview with Kazuhiko Torishima and Yuji Horii, granted on the occasion of TGS 2024, in which the two they are ironic about how Japanese works are received in the Westwith the need for continuous adaptations (they also talk about manga and anime), making jokes about some aspects that they don’t appreciate and don’t understand, (they talk for example about the use of “body type A and B” instead of male and female) but also explaining that the changes were made to please the classification bodies and speaking expressly about the influence of the Catholic religion (not exactly progressive, by definition) on certain choices. In short, they express a conflict between the way of seeing things in the East and the West that has existed for years (how can we forget the censored Castlevania crucifixes?)
Naturally, the interview has been interpreted by some as proof that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake would have been influenced by woke culture, because the two make quite heavy considerations on the difficulty of dealing with the United States.
