“Any further military intervention will greatly aggravate the situation and must be avoided,” Borrell told reporters in Mexico after an emergency teleconference of European Union foreign ministers.
He explained that the member states of the European Union are calling for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
He also considered that the safety of the United Nations peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL) is extremely important in Lebanon.
For his part, the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations said on Monday that UNIFIL forces were unable to conduct patrols due to the severity of the Israeli strikes and Hezbollah missiles targeting Israel.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Secretary-General António Guterres, told reporters, “UNIFIL forces remain in their positions in the mission’s area of responsibility, while the intensity of the fighting prevents their movements and ability to carry out the tasks assigned to them.”
He added: “Due to the intensity of the missile exchange, they are unable to carry out patrols.”
