Spanish media reported that Courtois’ return would take place in mid-October after the international matches window, which means he will miss the French Lille matches on Wednesday in the Champions League and Villarreal this weekend in the local league.
Real Madrid said in a statement: “After the tests conducted today (Monday) on our player Thibaut Courtois by Real Madrid’s medical services, he was diagnosed with an injury to the abductor muscle (of the hip).”
The Belgian goalkeeper spent most of last season away from the field due to a severe knee injury, but he returned in time to participate in the Champions League final, where he helped lead Real to its fifteenth title.
Ukrainian Andriy Lunin is expected to fill the void of Courtois’ absence, similar to what he did last season during Real’s campaign to win the Spanish League title as well.
