A hypothetical merger between Stellantis and Renault is back in the news. More than a year after the last rumors that the two groups were in negotiations for a partnership that would have created a company with 18 car brands, the topic is back in the spotlight, in a moment of great tension for the automotive sector. The hypothesis at the moment seems to be remote and very unlikely but there are those who are convinced that the dialogue is more than open.
BMW also appears
It was he who first broke the news Dagospiawhich highlighted that negotiations for the merger between Stellantis and Renault are open. To push the hand too Il Sole 24 Orewho spoke of October 15th as a possible decisive date to get a first taste of what could be the new European automotive alliance. A meeting between Luca de Meo and Carlos Tavares would be scheduled on that date, in which BMW with Oliver Zipse could also participate. Any type of dialogue that could also involve a German group could further broaden horizons but also make such a marriage even more unlikely.
The denial about the merger between Stellantis and Renault
The merger between Stellantis and Renault would lead to the creation of a new conglomerate, of 18 brands, with different critical issues: starting from the factories, with different production overlaps and consequently for the models, with the need to find an interpretation from the from a marketing point of view to further differentiate models that are already similar to each other at the moment. In this context, the French state would be the most satisfied of the parties, also holding a stake in Stellantis. There are even those who are already talking about Luca de Meo as the designated CEO of the new car giant. Meanwhile, John Elkann’s denial of any type of merger with Renault arrives: “There is no plan under consideration regarding merger operations with other manufacturers. We are focused on executing the long-term Business Plan”.
