Up to 100 Russian glide bombs hit Ukraine every day. This is Russia’s “daily terror,” says President Zelensky.
Kyiv – Russia is attacking Ukraine with undiminished severity. The Russian military uses around 100 glide bombs in Ukraine every day, which are guided directly to the target from aircraft, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his evening video address. On Sunday, the Russians injured 14 people in an attack on the industrial city of Zaporizhia in the south of the country and residential buildings were hit. The Russians also struck with glide bombs in the Kharkiv, Donetsk and Sumy regions. “This is Russia’s daily terror.”
Zelensky further said this is a constant reminder to all of Ukraine’s partners “that we need more long-range strike capabilities for Ukraine, that we need more air defense for Ukraine, that we need more sanctions against Russia.”
Zelensky has hopes for Ramstein meeting
The Ukrainian president looks forward to the meeting of Ukraine’s supporters in Ramstein with optimism. US President Joe Biden is traveling to Germany in a week and a half and wants to host a meeting of the so-called Ukraine Contact Group, which is led by the US, on October 12th at the level of heads of state and government.
Zelenskyj is also said to be there. Zelensky said that joint steps and a common vision must be decided on how to increase the pressure on Russia because of this war and because of peace. The Ukraine contact group includes around 50 countries, and Germany is also involved. The defense ministers of the member countries normally take part in the regular discussions.
Ukraine urgently needs more air defense systems and heavy weapons. In addition, Zelensky and the Ukrainian military are demanding permission from the West to use the long-range weapons they have supplied against military targets on Russian territory.
So far, this permission has not been granted, which is why Ukraine is using combat drones of its own production for these attacks. However, these only have low explosive power. According to calculations by a Ukrainian military expert, between 150 and 200 drones would have to be used simultaneously and against different targets in order to overcome Russian air defenses.
Russia has recently complicated the West’s decision-making on this issue by changing its nuclear doctrine. Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of the Moscow Security Council on nuclear deterrence that Russia could also use nuclear weapons in the event of a massive attack from the air, i.e. with cruise missiles, aircraft, missiles or drones.
Eastern Ukraine: Artillery duels and Russian air strikes
Fierce artillery duels and Russian air strikes with glide bombs shook the sectors of the front in eastern Ukraine. The General Staff in Kiev said in its evening situation report that around 20 settlements near Sumy and Kharkiv alone were shelled by Russian artillery.
New Russian attacks against Ukrainian defense lines have been reported from the crisis areas around Donbass. At Pokrovsk, 13 attacks were repulsed, and at Kurachowe, 17 advances by Russian troops were stopped. The information could not be independently verified.
According to reports, similar heavy fighting took place in the Wuhledar area. Ukrainian military experts feared that the small town in the southern section of the Donbass, which has been fought over for two years, could soon be captured by Russian units. dpa
