Professor Nicolaides, who is internationally known as the “Father of Fetal Medicine,” emphasized that a woman dies somewhere in our world, every minute, due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth, pointing to the importance of new technologies and methodologies that aim to enhance fetal medicine practices and improve outcomes for mothers and fetuses. who have not yet been born in the area.
The “Father of Fetal Medicine,” who holds this title for his global contributions to the field of fetal medicine, chairs the International Conference on Fetal Medicine in the Emirates, whose activities began yesterday, in Abu Dhabi, with the participation of more than 500 doctors and specialists in the field of fetal medicine from 14 countries.
The two-day conference, which is being organized for the first time in the Middle East, was attended by Minister of State Dr. Maitha bint Salem Al Shamsi, and senior health leaders from the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi.
The conference, hosted by Burjeel Holding Company, included 22 scientific lectures focusing on early screening for fetal malformations, screening for preeclampsia, fetal growth problems, artificial placenta, and fetal surgery, among other innovative treatments, advanced research, and complex fetal procedures.
Professor Nicolaides expressed his regret that a woman dies every minute somewhere in the world due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth. He considered these disappointing statistics to be a driving force to continue our efforts in training the largest possible number of specialists from the UAE, enabling us to reach a greater number of population, especially in Africa and neighboring regions to achieve this goal and provide vital training for doctors and improve health care for those in these regions.
Professor Nicolaides is world-renowned for revolutionizing fetal medicine through his research achievements and wide-ranging clinical practice, from introducing intrauterine blood transfusions to treat fetal anemia, to performing laparoscopic laser surgery for twin-twin transfusion syndrome.
Professor Nicolaides was honored by Dr. Maitha bint Salem Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Health Facility Sectors at the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Fayza Saif Al Yafei, and Senior Vice President of Medical Services at ADNOC and Non-Executive Board Member of Burjeel Holding, Dr. Goya Al Neyadi.
Dr. Maitha bint Salem Al Shamsi said that hosting such important events in Abu Dhabi enhances the emirate’s role in hosting international conferences that work to develop the health sector locally and globally.
The conference contributes to creating a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration and the exchange of cutting-edge ideas among healthcare professionals, and also explores ways to ensure adequate training for fetal medicine doctors in the region.
