Hezbollah’s executive council chose Hashem Safieddine as the new secretary general of the Lebanese terrorist group, sources consulted on the website of the Saudi broadcaster Al-Arabiya reported this Sunday (29).
Safieddine is the cousin of Hassan Nasrallah, who was secretary general of Hezbollah since 1992 and was killed in an Israeli attack on the terrorist group’s HQ in Beirut on Friday (27).
According to information from the Iran Insight website, Safieddine is 60 years old and studied theology alongside Nasrallah in Najaf, Iraq, and Qom, Iran, two important centers of Shiite religious education. Both became members of Hezbollah in the terrorist group’s early years.
The target of sanctions from the United States and Saudi Arabia, Safieddine led Hezbollah’s executive council and, in addition to political and ideological affinities, has family ties to Iran, the group’s main supporter.
His brother, Abdullah, represents Hezbollah in Iran and his son Redha is married to the daughter of Qasem Soleimani, an Iranian general killed in a United States drone strike in Baghdad, Iraq, in January 2020.
