Juarez City.– In Juárez, during the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the number of victims of intentional homicide doubled, compared to the previous period with Enrique Peña Nieto at the helm.
Between December 2012 and November 2018, 3,768 murder victims were registered in this municipality, a figure that shot up by 101.49 percent in the period between December 2018 and August 2024, to a figure of 7,592, according to data from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
In the six-year period that is about to end, the border town represented 57.19 percent of victims in the entire state of Chihuahua, in relation to the 38.44 percent it registered between 2012 and 2018. That is, the violence was concentrated and intensified in Juárez.
In the previous 72-month period, 9,802 victims were registered throughout the state, and in 69 of López Obrador’s 70 months, data from the FGE and the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) show that there were 13 thousand 275, which also meant a 35.43 percent increase in homicidal violence in Chihuahua.
These homicides committed during the previous period led to the opening of 8,115 investigation folders in the investigative body in the state, that is, each folder has an average of 1.21 victims, while so far in the current period the average was of 1.16 for each of the 11,452 open research folders.
The municipalities with the most population in Chihuahua (Juárez and the capital) are those that concentrated the majority of the incidence of these high-impact crimes, although it is evident in the calculations that the border town increased its relevance in the figure.
While between 2012 and 2018, 3,185 cases were registered in Juárez, in the current period there were 6,494, an increase of 103.89 percent of cases, which may contain more than one victim.
In the municipality of Chihuahua, the increase in cases was 29.61 percent, which meant going from 1,479 open investigation folders for intentional homicide to 1,917.
Between both municipalities there are 4,664 cases of murder, 57.47 percent of what occurred in the entire state in the 72 months of Peña Nieto’s administration, but 73.45 percent (8,411 of 11,452) in the 69 months of the outgoing president. .
