The ninth debate between the candidates for Mayor of São Paulo promoted by Record this Saturday, 28th, featured 11 requests for the right to reply, all of which were denied. PRTB candidate Pablo Marçal was the only one to receive a warning and, as a result, lost 30 seconds in the final considerations. However, there was no isolated role among the six invited candidates, despite the fact that mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) were the main targets during the clashes.
This was the first meeting held after the episode of aggression between Marçal’s advisor and Ricardo Nunes’ marketer. As Estadão showed, the event organizers preferred to use plastic cups, fixed chairs to the floor and positioned cameras to monitor the teams accompanying the candidates.
Nunes and Boulos fight over Janones’ split
During a direct confrontation between Boulos and Nunes, the psolista questioned the mayor about where he was during the Enel blackouts. Thousands of São Paulo residents were left without electricity for several days in November 2023, and similar problems occurred again in 2024. Nunes even requested termination of the contract with the energy company, but did not answer the psolista’s question in this Saturday’s debate. Instead, he sought to reverse the matter, citing Boulos’s opinion to close the complaint against federal deputy André Janones (Avante-MG).
As a federal deputy, Boulos was the rapporteur for the PL’s representation against Janones and asked for the case investigating the practice of “rachadinha” to be closed, when parts of the salaries of cabinet employees are passed on to a parliamentarian. At the time, Boulos denied that there was just cause for the case to continue before the collegiate, as it dealt with “facts that occurred before the beginning of the mandate”. He also said that “the Judiciary will do its job” in the investigation.
“Boulos has no experience in public management,” said the mayor during the debate. “His only major action was to free Janones from the cracks”, he continued. The MDB candidate also brought up his opponent’s participation in invasions by the Homeless Workers Movement (MTST) in the past. The psolist was the general coordinator of the MTST for years and, during a hearing at Estadão, he stated that, if elected, he will reinstate possession if there are invasions of public land and properties.
Marçal calls Boulos de Boules and receives a warning
While sharing the screen with Marina Helena (Novo), the former coach referred to the PSOL candidate as Boules, in a pejorative reference to the use of neutral language. After correcting himself, Marçal resumed his speech shortly afterwards, but was warned and suffered a time penalty, losing 30 seconds of his final considerations.
“I don’t want to see Boules,” he said. “Forgiveness. I don’t want to see Boulos being mayor of this city”, resumed Marçal.
On August 24, during a rally in Campo Limpo, in the south of São Paulo, which was attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) for a demonstration of support, an interpreter changed the verses of the National Anthem in the section “ of the sons of this soil” for “des filhs of this soil”. After the repercussion of the event, Boulos broke with the event’s producer and stated that he had not participated in the decision to change the phrase.
Marçal and Datena do a double act to criticize Nunes
After facing each other directly in the episode of aggression involving the use of a chair in the debate held by Cultura on the 15th of this month, Marçal and presenter José Luiz Datena (PSDB) came together to criticize the administration of the current mayor, Ricardo Nunes.
The PRTB candidate directly asked Datena who was the worst mayor in São Paulo. After considering that the question was difficult, the presenter started talking about Nunes, saying that he did not fulfill 50% of Bruno Covas’ (PSDB) promises. The emedebista was vice-president of Covas from the 2020 election onwards and assumed the seat after the death of his running mate. “How many sidewalks did he promise, that Bruno (Covas) promised and he (Nunes) didn’t do? He may not be the worst mayor, but he is there”, said the journalist.
Marçal then stated that in other debates he would have said that the worst mayor in the capital was Fernando Haddad (PT), but he wanted to correct himself. “Mayor Ricardo is in place. We have the worst air in the world, thousands of children on the streets, an increase in crime”, said the PRTB candidate.
Datena concludes by saying that Nunes needed to be more diligent in his administration and stated that the Primeiro Comando Capital (PCC) would be infiltrated in the capital’s transport system.
Marina Helena accuses Tabata of plagiarism and leaves her with no response time
Federal deputy Tabata Amaral (PSB) chose economist Marina Helena (Novo) to comment on proposals aimed at homeless people, especially the elderly. The interaction between the two continues respectfully and without disagreements, until, during her time for rejoinder, the Novo candidate accuses the deputy of plagiarizing proposals throughout her political career. “I think that’s the thing, it’s very important that we win in life, but it’s not good that we do it by going over other people”, began Marina.
The economist said there were reports of a deputy who made a complaint alleging that the project to provide high school scholarships for children was his. Marina also says that another deputy, in 2020, said that her proposal for sanitary pads in schools was copied. Without time to speak and denied the right to respond, Tabata returned to the subject later while responding to Nunes.
“Marina Helena, the only way she finds to appear is to bring one lie after another. If you have any questions, search: Nesting Fee. I am very happy to have written this project. Look at the name that appears as the main author”, said the deputy.
The economist has focused on the deputy since the beginning of the debate campaign. Among the possible reasons for the clashes may be the dispute for the female vote and a possible confrontation for a position in the Chamber of Deputies in 2026, as reported by Coluna do Estadão. In turn, Tabata has already stated that he intends to take legal action against his opponent after the electoral period.
Marçal changes Boulos’ number to PT’s
When sharing debate time with Tabata Amaral, the former coach began to address voters and proposed a “challenge for those who intend to vote for the Workers’ Party”, associating Boulos with President Lula, from whom the psolist receives support. However, the number of the PSOL deputy at the polls is not the same as that mentioned by Marçal.
“First of all, typing any number, you will type the number 28 and I want to see you there in intimate contact, just the two of us, face to face. Regardless of whether you are going to vote for PT’s 13, do the following, type 28, take a deep breath and I know that you will follow your heart and we will win in the first round”, said the PRTB candidate.
Changing the number is a concern for Boulos’ ticket, which fears that the electorate will be confused by the algorithms due to the association between the deputy’s image and President Lula. In addition, the psolist also has Marta Suplicy (PT) as vice-mayor. At the end of his next speech, Boulos reinforced that his electoral number is 50, for PSOL, and not 13.
