Security measures in the ghetto were raised further in Rome and to the sensitive objectives of the Jewish community, in light of the situation in the Middle East, the recent anti-Semitic demonstrations and the pro-Palestine marches announced close to the anniversary of 7 October in the capital and banned in recent days. The level of security, according to what we learn, was already very high.
“Processions at risk of terrorist infiltration”
Meanwhile, the day after the pro-Palestine demonstration in Milan where signs against Liliana Segre appeared, the former deputy mayor of Milan and Fdi deputy Riccardo De Corato raises the alarm of terrorism in the demonstrations. “With regret I note that, as we read from the leaflets distributed, demonstrations with clear anti-Semitic content will be held in the city of Milan. I am concerned that on these occasions the memory of the Israelis captured and killed during the cowardly Hamas attack on 7 October may be outraged, also given the concomitance of the dates of the initiatives announced. I hope it doesn’t happen but I fear that these demonstrations could be a den of hatred with a high risk of terrorist infiltration.”
And the Milanese Jewish community returns to stigmatize “what was put on the streets in Milan on Saturday 28/9 by the propal ‘protesters'”, judged to be “of exceptional gravity. Unfortunately, this demonstrates how there is no longer any limit that can be considered insurmountable in its unacceptability. A spiral of blind anti-Semitic hatred and genocidal appeals now comparable to those of Nazi-fascist origin has been created of the 30s and 40s of the last century – says President Walker Meghnagi -. It is a total and absolute involution of sensibilities, morals and the educational and cultural progress that Western civil societies had implemented after the Second World War. It is a return to a ‘Middle Ages’ that was thought to be outdated and sublimated, but which we note with profound anguish and dismay having re-emerged from the dark times of History”.
“A further reason for great concern – he adds – is the continuous push further and further in trampling on and violating the canons that define and characterize free and democratic societies without them reacting by passively suffering these outrages. This can only lead to a further involution accompanied by a raising of the bar by these groups. We are one step away from Jew hunting and acts of open violence towards religious and non-religious Jewish institutions and their representatives”.
