In an interview with Israeli Channel 13, on Saturday evening, Olmert confirmed the belief, which has not yet been confirmed, that Israel was behind the assassination of Imad Mughniyeh.
Mughniyeh, the military commander of Hezbollah at the time, was killed in a car explosion in Syria, and despite reports indicating that the Mossad carried out the operation with the help of the CIA, Israel never took responsibility for the incident.
Olmert said during the meeting: “We did not talk about the operation in the past, but today we can confirm that we were the ones who organized it.”
Olmert refused to reveal the details of the operation, but stressed that it contained “very exciting” details.
Olmert pointed out that Mughniyeh was the most dangerous man in Hezbollah, and he was responsible for establishing the party’s military forces.
It is noteworthy that Olmert served as Prime Minister of Israel, at the height of the conflict with Hezbollah, between 2006 and 2009.
Olmert’s confession comes 24 hours after the announcement of the killing of Hezbollah Secretary General, Hassan Nasrallah, at dawn on Saturday.
