Madrid, Spain.- Spanish leftist Sumar party MP Gerardo Pisarello has sided with Claudia Sheinbaum’s team regarding the diplomatic controversy sparked by the King of Spain, adding that he will attend the inauguration of the president-elect.
“On two occasions, President López Obrador asked Felipe VI to apologize for the excesses committed during the Spanish conquest. The Royal Family could have acted with respect but opted for arrogance. They could have apologized like Pope Francis, like many European monarchs who also apologized,” Pisarello said in a video posted on social media.
“It is logical that a King who did not respect is not respected. It is logical that a King who disdained is snubbed.” Previously, both the Spanish Crown and the Government of Spanish President Pedro Sánchez rejected the fact that King Felipe VI was not invited to Sheinbaum’s inauguration, which will take place on October 1.
Pisarello said he would attend the event, despite Spain’s announcement that it would not send a delegation to the inauguration.
“But we do want to make it clear that here in this Congress there are many of us who believe that the people of Mexico are not a people of subjects but of free men and women. That is why this October 1st we will be there to pay our respects to this dignified people,” said the deputy. According to Spanish media, deputies Jon Iñarritu and Javier Sánchez Serna will also attend the inauguration. Sheinbaum assured that she did not send an invitation to Felipe VI by refusing to respond to the letter in which the crown was asked to apologize for the abuses committed during the conquest. This letter was sent by López Obrador in 2019. “When the Spanish crown refuses not only forgiveness, which makes people great, it does not shame them, but it makes them great, and there is no official response to the President of the Republic, not only to Andrés Manuel López Obrador, but to the President of the Republic, representative of the people of Mexico, of the nation, of the Mexican State, then evidently it is not only an insult to the president the man, but to the people of Mexico,” he said.
