The FBI released a report on Monday (23) indicating that there was an increase in hate crimes against Jews in the United States in 2023.
In total, 1,832 cases of physical and verbal aggression considered anti-Semitic were recorded, an increase of 63% compared to the previous year.
According to statistics, anti-Semitic incidents accounted for 15 percent of all hate crimes committed in the country last year and 68 percent of all religion-based violations, which totaled 11,862 crimes, even though Jews make up just 2 percent of the US population.
According to the document, Jews were targeted more often than any other religious group in the country last year.
Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Jewish organization Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which has also recorded record numbers of anti-Semitic incidents in its own reports, expressed concern about the recent numbers involving anti-Semitism.
“At a time when the Jewish community is still reeling from a sharp rise in anti-Semitism following the October 7 Hamas massacre in Israel, the record number of hate crime incidents against Jews is, unfortunately, entirely consistent with the Jewish community’s experience and ADL’s monitoring.”
Cases involving violence against Arabs also increased by 34 percent, according to the FBI, totaling 123 over the year, the highest number since the bureau began keeping track in 2015.
According to the FBI, more than 16,000 agencies across the country submitted hate crime data for the past year, covering 95.2 percent of the U.S. population, though not all agencies submitted data for every month of the year.
Some large cities have reported no hate crime data at all, suggesting that the numbers are likely to be even higher. In 2023, Orlando, Florida, and Newark, New Jersey, for example, reported no data at all.
