UN General Debate begins: Erdogan, Biden and Peseschkian will give speeches
First report: New York – Overshadowed by the escalating Middle East conflict, the 79th General Debate of the UN General Assembly began in New York on Tuesday. Among the speakers on the first day of the week-long diplomatic summit at the UN headquarters were Joe Biden, the US President, Recep Tayyip Erdoganthe Turkish President, and Massoud Peseschkian, the Iranian President. They spoke to the representatives of the 193 UN member states.
This week, around 130 heads of state and government from around the world are travelling to New York to take part in the general debate. For Biden, the outgoing incumbent, it will be the last appearance on the big UN stage.

The first day of the debate was marked by the ongoing escalation in the conflict between Israel and the pro-Iranian Hezbollahmilitia in Lebanon. Shortly before the start of the general debate, the Israeli army carried out a targeted attack in the Lebanese capital Beirut.
The day before, the Israeli military had attacked around 1,600 targets in an attempt to destroy Hezbollah’s infrastructure. According to the Lebanese government, at least 558 people were killed.
Summit from Ukraine War and Middle East conflict overshadowed
In addition to the conflict in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine is a central topic of the speeches and numerous high-level meetings on the sidelines of the general debate. The UN Security Council will also address the situation in Ukraine on Tuesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will address the General Assembly on Wednesday and will be received by Biden in Washington a day later.
