Iranian President Pezeshkian: Tehran Never Approved Aggression Against Ukraine
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran had never approved of “aggression against Ukrainian territory.” He added that “the borders of each country must be respected.”
In addition, speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the Iranian president notedthat he believes in resolving the conflict in Ukraine through dialogue, and that he is ready to discuss it with representatives of European countries and the United States. “We are ready to sit down with the Europeans and Americans at the negotiating table,” he said.
Pezeshkian also once again denied claims that Iran supplies weapons to Russia.
The Kremlin called Pezeshkian’s words Iran’s sovereign position
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the Iranian president’s words, noted that this is Iran’s sovereign position. At the same time, the Russian side will continue “to explain our position and everything related to this conflict around Ukraine to our Iranian friends.”
“We have very positive developments in cooperation in a wide variety of areas. We expect that this cooperation will continue to expand,” Peskov added.
Iran’s new government has promised to support peace initiatives in Ukraine
In July, Masoud Pezeshkian said that the new government would actively support initiatives aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine. “We strive for peace for the peoples of Russia and Ukraine,” he noted.
In turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that it was ready to consider Iran as a mediator in negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, “if it shows interest.” But at that time, Moscow had not received any specific signals from Tehran.
And Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri said that the country does not consider military confrontation between Russia and the West a solution to the conflict in Ukraine. “Our advice to both sides is to use dialogue in a political context,” he noted.
Iran Wants to Sign Strategic Partnership Agreement with Russia
In September, it became known that Masoud Pezeshkian would sign a strategic partnership agreement with Moscow during his official visit to Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the proposal of the Russian Foreign Ministry to sign such an agreement. “The Russian Foreign Ministry is allowed to make changes to the draft document during negotiations, if they are not of a fundamental nature,” the text of the presidential order states.
Pezeshkian himself said that Tehran will continue to improve relations with Moscow. “The fourteenth government will actively pursue the ongoing cooperation and measures to raise the level of relations between the two countries,” the politician said, adding that relations will develop on a permanent, continuous and long-term basis.
