Monster Hunter It has always been a series of quality games but it certainly wasn’t one of the leading names in the video game market. Since when did “things change”? At what point did Monster Hunter really step up?
According to many, Monster Hunter World marked a before and after in the Capcom saga. Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, however, disagrees. The real turning point of the saga was a chapter for PSP.
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is the game that changed Monster Hunter
According to Tsujimoto, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 – 2008 PSP chapter – came “at a time when people were less likely to gather at friends’ houses to play together.” The PS2 had a bit of a hard time convincing players to take advantage of Monster Hunter’s online multiplayer, but the PSP allowed for much easier cooperation.
With that hardware, Tusjimoto says Capcom was “able to let people experience that kind of fun,” and the PSP’s built-in connectivity helped establish Monster Hunter as “a game that encourages communication.”
Sure, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 had happened practically only in Japanwhere it sold the majority of its four million copies. 2018’s Monster Hunter World sold five million units in three days, eventually reaching 20 million, with the expansion’s sales added to that.
Furthermore, the success of Monster Hunter World certainly influenced the development of Monster Hunter Wilds: Capcom itself states that Monster Hunter Wilds took longer to develop than expected because World was too successful.
