Behaviour Interactive is going through a very particular period, with staff reductions on one side and expansions on the other, which makes it quite difficult to understand exactly what the long-term plan is for the company, which today also announced theAcquisition of Red Hood Studios, the team behind Darkest Dungeon.
The announcement comes just days after the cancellation of Project T, which was supposed to be a spin-off of Dead by Daylight, which also saw the complete closure of Midwinter Entertainment, the team that had been put to work on the project in question, but evidently the company still intends to expand into other areas.
Several layoffs within Behaviour Interactive had also been announced at the beginning of the year, but it is clear that the label is moving forward with a plan that should still lead to a general evolution.
An acquisition with a conceptual basis
This is evidently due to the acquisition of Red Hood Entertainment, which has so far sold nearly 7 million copies of its roguelike RPG series, including Darkest Dungeon and Darkest Dungeon 2.
With the acquisition, all 29 members of the team will also be retained, so the team will continue to operate as it has done up to now.
“It’s a privilege to welcome a developer of Red Hook’s caliber,” said Rémi Racine, CEO and co-founder of Behaviour, in a statement. “Earlier this year, we set an ambitious goal for our future as a publisher: to make Behaviour synonymous with horror and surround Dead by Daylight with a library of equally exceptional horror games. The acquisition of Red Hook is another important step toward that goal, with more to come.”
For his part, Red Hook co-founder Chris Bourassa responded: “We have found kindred spirits in the Behaviour team. Both studios are Canadian, independent, and dedicated to making great horror games. What sets us apart is scale, which opens the door to new possibilities. Behaviour’s support will help us pursue our vision for the future of Red Hook and fully focus on transforming Darkest Dungeon into an absolute juggernaut of the dark fantasy genre.”
So there is also a “conceptual” motivation behind the choice of Red Hook, and that is the fact of inserting the team into a production context focused on horror titlesalthough Darkest Dungeon sits a bit on the edge of the genre.
