Ciudad Juarez.- Sunland Park officials are awaiting White House approval for construction of the Anapra international crossing, U.S. Consul General in Ciudad Juarez Rafael Foley said.
“It is something that local authorities are very interested in, there is a process that is being followed and the municipality of Sunny Park has sent a request to the White House for the study and for the approval of opening new border bridges and that is being studied by the White House, they must give their approval, it is still under consideration,” explained the diplomat.
On April 3, Sunland Park Mayor Javier Perea and Juarez Mayor Cruz Perez Cuellar presented the project for the new international crossing between Anapra and Sunland Park, which will be built on the U.S. side with an estimated investment of 120 million dollars and on the Mexican side with an investment of 40 to 50 million dollars.
It was then said that the new crossing between Chihuahua and New Mexico could begin in a period of two to five years and would have a pedestrian area, which would be located after the last street of Anapra, and a vehicular area, which is planned to be built before the hill located in that area.
“Also looking at the integration and the vision in trade of the movement of people from one side of the border to the other, and doing it in the best way that it can be done between Mexico and the United States,” said the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, during his visit to Ciudad Juárez, on Friday, September 20.
Salazar also spoke about the modernization project of the Bridge of the Americas Land Port of Entry in El Paso, Texas (BOTA), for which the United States General Services Administration (GSA) announced that it had published the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that same day.
“The environmental study for Phase A was released, where three options are being considered for the Bridge of the Americas: the first is to do nothing, the second is to make improvements but close it to cargo traffic, and the third is to not, to continue commercial cargo on the Bridge of the Americas,” he reported.
From the date of publication, the public has 45 days to make their comments via email. [email protected].
“These 45 days ahead will be very important for all those who are impacted by the decision to give their opinions, the governments, also the citizens, that is what this 45 days are for, but I want to emphasize that the importance of this project is part of what we are doing in an investment of almost a billion dollars to build a port here that is one of the most modern on the entire border, and we are doing that, we have worked hard,” said the diplomat.
