Turku the court of appeal reduced the punishment of a man who shot his common-law partner in the face. The crime took place in April last year in Janakkala.
According to the verdict of the district court in Kanta-Häme, the man handled the pipe shotgun while intoxicated, with the result that it went off towards the woman’s face and she died.
The court considered that the man should have understood that when the gun went off, the bullet would most likely hit the woman. The district court sentenced the man to nine years in prison for manslaughter and other crimes.
The man requested the court of appeals to convict him of aggravated manslaughter instead of manslaughter or to reduce the sentence. He pleaded that he had not killed the woman on purpose.
Court accepted the reasoning of the district court, but ended up assessing the length of the punishment differently. Atte Aleks Patrik Ylitalo27, was sentenced to eight years and three months in prison.
The verdict was handed down on August 30.
