Former FDP Interior Minister Gerhart Baum strongly advises his party against breaking with the coalition after the disappointment in Brandenburg.
Berlin – Former Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhart Baum (FDP) has predicted the downfall of his party if it leaves the coalition with the SPD and the Greens. “The FDP must not under any circumstances leave the traffic light coalition. That would be suicide,” Baum told the Rheinische PostThe 91-year-old also said that our country and the world have other problems and that the FDP’s withdrawal from the traffic light coalition was an escape from responsibility.
Baum demanded that the FDP expand its political spectrum. Financial stability and economic growth are important, but should not be the Liberals’ sole main concern. “We are experiencing a crisis in world politics that has not been seen in decades. And we as the FDP do not have the necessary perspectives for this.” His recommendation to the FDP: do everything possible to keep core industries such as the automotive, chemical and steel industries in the country, if necessary with state aid and participation.
FDP parliamentary group vice-chairman: Traffic light coalition should not be negligently put at risk
FDP parliamentary group vice-chairman Konstantin Kuhle warns against negligently jeopardising the traffic light coalition. ZDF-heute journal He expressed understanding for the frustration within his party after the election defeat in Brandenburg and for doubts as to whether the coalition could handle the economic problems. Nevertheless, Kuhle stressed that they had to try and not play carelessly with ending the coalition. In view of calls within the FDP to leave the coalition, he criticized such an approach as irresponsible.
After the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, Bavaria’s FDP leader Martin Hagen has openly questioned his party’s continued membership in the traffic light coalition in Berlin. “We as the FDP have to ask ourselves very honestly whether this coalition is still viable for us,” said Hagen, who also sits on the FDP’s federal executive board, to the Munich MerkurHe stressed that breaking up the coalition was not a decision to be taken lightly, but added: “The traffic light coalition hardly has any support among the population anymore. Things cannot go on like this.”
The FDP hardly plays a role in Brandenburg anymore. In the state elections on Sunday, the Liberals only received 0.8 percent of the vote. The situation was similar in Saxony and Thuringia. FDP vice-chairman Wolfgang Kubicki expressed doubts as to whether the traffic light coalition would last until Christmas. Party leader Christian Lindner spoke of an “autumn of decisions” and stressed that key questions of economic policy, the budget and immigration control must be clarified this autumn. When asked, the finance minister named the end of the year as the deadline. (dpa/jal)
