China Customs: Russia Bought $12 Million in Diamonds
In the last month of summer, Russia imported a large batch of diamonds from China for the first time. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the Chinese Customs Service.
The volume of this lot was more than 35 thousand 230 carats or slightly more than seven kilograms of stones. The purchase amount from the neighboring country is estimated at 12.4 million dollars.
It is noted that Russia has purchased such a large batch of this product from China for the first time. The last time a similar deal was made was in 2013, but then it was less than 200 thousand dollars.
In early August, a forecast emerged that the Russian diamond mining company Alrosa might stop selling its products abroad. The reason was weak demand for diamonds. Before that, the world’s largest gemstone cutter, the Indian Kiran Gems, sent 50,000 employees on forced leave. And the international corporation Da Beers cancelled its August trading session, citing an oversupply of diamonds on the market.
