The debate promoted by Flow, this Monday, the 23rd, between the candidates for Mayor of São Paulo, Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), José Luiz Datena (PSDB), Marina Helena (Novo), Pablo Marçal (PRTB), Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and Tabata Amaral (PSB), was interrupted after confusion in the studio. Marçal was expelled during the final considerations.
The mediator, Carlos Tramontina, suspended the debate after Marçal “repeatedly” disregarded the rules. “I had to suspend the debate to exclude candidate Pablo Marçal, who repeatedly disregarded the rules. When he was leaving, there was a scuffle and candidate Ricardo Nunes’ advisor was attacked and is bleeding heavily at this moment.”
He explains that the PRTB candidate decided to be aggressive in his closing remarks. “The last person chosen to make the closing remarks was Pablo Marçal, and he apparently adopted the plan of doing everything he did not do in terms of aggression and disrespect throughout the debate. During the debate, he behaved like the others, presenting ideas and proposals. In the end, as the last to speak, he began a series of insulting and slanderous accusations, which, according to the rules, could not be accepted.”
“I interrupted him, he got angry and I said: ‘I have the authority to interrupt as your advisor signed’. I went back to him and he immediately repeated it. The third time, he was excluded from the debate with ten seconds left. It was that simple”, reported Tramontina.
Marçal wanted to use the final time of his speech to say negative things about the candidates without “any accountability or consequences,” says Tramontina. “He clearly used the final time expecting that this would be the end of the debate, without any accountability or consequences. As the debate mediator, I was simply enforcing the rules. He insulted and slandered, as was not allowed by the rules.”
Tramontina describes the commotion and says that he left provoking the other candidates. “He leaves, a commotion forms because there was a group that was with him and, pushing the rest of the people who were there, they come to get close to him. He left with an attitude of provocation towards the others who were there. All I know is that someone punched the advisor of candidate Ricardo Nunes. He bled a lot.”
Among the rules provided, personal attacks and insults were punishable by a warning. Three warnings resulted in expulsion.
