A man drives his car into a group of people celebrating at a church festival in Lower Franconia. Was it an accident due to a health problem – or intentional?
Großwallstadt – A group of people celebrating at a church fair in Lower Franconia was hit by a car – five of them suffered minor injuries. After the incident in Großwallstadt near the border with Hesse, the police announced that it was still unclear whether it was an accident or whether the 58-year-old driver deliberately drove his car into the group. When asked, a police spokesman said the man may have had a heart attack. The Aschaffenburg criminal investigation department has taken over the investigation and is looking for witnesses. The Kerb – the church fair – was canceled.
The police spokesman said that the car drove into the group in the city center in the late afternoon, as they were sitting on benches and chairs on a street that was part of the festival area. Initially, it was said that the car had ended up on the sidewalk.
Because the driver had to be resuscitated, they initially assumed that a health problem was the cause of the accident, the police said. However, further investigations led them to the conclusion that he may have deliberately driven into the group at the church festival. “An expert was called in to clarify the course of events,” they said.
In addition to the fire brigade, the rescue service and a crisis intervention team were on site to care for the injured, among whom was a ten-year-old child. The three-day church festival in the town in the Miltenberg district began on Saturday and was actually only supposed to end on Monday evening. dpa
