The world’s largest cocoa producer, Côte d’Ivoire, faces numerous challenges. The fight against trafficking in the so-called “brown gold” is at the top of the list. Some farmers believe that the prices set by the state for the sale of cocoa beans are too low. They prefer to sell their harvest clandestinely to traffickers, who then transport it to Liberia or Guinea at very attractive prices. This means a significant loss of income for the Ivorian government, which also has to deal with traceability and deforestation. A report by Julia Guggenheim and Damien Koffi.
