Government members are trying to internally suppress information about the meeting, which was not part of their official commitments
The President’s Meeting Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) with Shell’s global CEO, Wael Sawanin New York (USA), caused discomfort in the government because it was understood internally as contrary to the “green agenda” that the PT member intended to bring to the country.
The meeting was held on the morning of this Monday (23.Sep.2024) at the official residence of the Brazilian representation to the UN (United Nations) in the United States. It was not in the official commitments and was not included even after the Ministry of Finance have confirmed the meeting.
According to the Poder360 found out, government members tried to obtain information about the meeting, but the subject matter discussed is being kept confidential to those who participated in the meeting. Participating were:
- Cristiano Pinto da Costa – president of Shell Brazil;
- Fernando Haddad – Minister of Finance;
- Mauro Vieira – Minister of Foreign Affairs;
- Celso Amorim – special advisor to the Presidency of the Republic;
- Sérgio Danese – permanent representative of Brazil to the United Nations;
- Audo Faleiro – deputy advisor to the Presidency of the Republic.
Lula is in New York to participate in the 79th UN General Assembly, which will open on Tuesday (September 24). In his speech, the president is expected to reinforce his demand for funding from richer countries for environmental preservation and energy transition. He will say that the situation in Brazil is a consequence of the climate crisis that the planet is going through and that everyone is responsible.
Haddad is also accompanying him and participating in Climate Week, held in the North American city. Participation is seen as necessary by the economic team to attract resources, especially after the Fed (Federal Reserve, the North American Central Bank) cut interest rates on September 18, opening up investment possibilities in Brazil.
Haddad has been presenting investors with possibilities for the country’s development in the ecological area. Climate Week brings together foreign executives who invest in the green economy. Haddad has said since the beginning of Lula’s government that Brazil has the potential to be the main spokesperson for sustainable development in the world.
The minister will have the challenge of showing CEOs and other executives that Brazil, in addition to organizing the 2025 COP (United Nations Climate Change Conference) in Belém (PA), wants to implement the Ecological Transformation Plan for the world. Among the topics are the carbon market, taxonomy, the TFFF and other measures.
