On Monday night, in an unprecedented decision, the Federal Court of Argentina issued arrest warrant against Venezuelan president Nicolas Madurothe Minister of the Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabelloand other Chavista leaders.

This decision comes after a case brought by Argentine lawyers who collected testimonies detailing the commission of crimes against humanity.
The decision was made by the judges Pablo Bertuzzi, Leopoldo Bruglia and Mariano Llorensof Chamber I of the Federal Court of the City of Buenos Aires.
The case was initiated by the Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy (FADD) in 2023 and is based on the principle of universal jurisdiction, in which actors who commit these crimes must be tried.
Thomas Farini Duggan, The legal representative of the Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy, thanked the judges for granting the request of the plaintiff and the Prosecutor’s Office, which in a hearing held last Tuesday asked the court to summon Maduro and other leaders of the Chavista regime to be questioned and to order their arrest.
The lawyer stressed that this “is an achievement of the brave victims who, with courage, have testified about the persecution, arbitrary detentions, forced disappearances and torture suffered under the Venezuelan dictatorship.”
Venezuela ordered the arrest of Javier Milei on Monday
The decision comes hours after Venezuelan justice also made official on Monday an arrest warrant against the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, for the case of a Venezuelan cargo plane that was confiscated in Buenos Aires in 2022.
As anticipated by EL TIEMPO, the Supreme Court of Justice indicated that it “agreed, in accordance with the provisions of the substantive criminal regulations, to the request made by the Public Prosecutor’s Office on 09-18-2024, in which it indicates measures of deprivation of liberty, based on the investigation carried out against the natural persons of the citizens Javier Gerardo Milei, in his capacity as President of the Republic of Argentina; Karina Milei, in her capacity as Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic of Argentina; and Patricia Bullrich, in her capacity as Minister of National Security of the Republic of Argentina.”
