Weather|Heavy snowfall is expected in some places in Käsivarren Lapland from the beginning of the week. In the rest of Finland, the weather will become unstable from Wednesday.
The summary is made by artificial intelligence and checked by a human.
The first snow will probably fall in Finland on the night between Monday and Tuesday.
Heavy snowfall and snow accumulations of more than 10 centimeters are expected in Käsivarren Lapland.
In Sodankylä, the night before Monday was exceptionally cold for the time, when the temperature dropped to almost minus 10 degrees.
Southern and Eastern Finland, on the other hand, will be exceptionally warm from the beginning of the week, when the temperature can rise up to 20 degrees in some places.
From the end of the week, all of Finland will receive rain.
In Finland the official first snow will probably fall on the night between Monday and Tuesday.
Heavy snowfall can be expected in places in Käsivarren Lapland, says the meteorologist on duty at the Finnish Meteorological Institute Jani Parviainen. Forecasts on the arm show snow accumulations of more than 10 centimeters.
“But it’s hard to say, a lot of it stays on the ground when it’s the first snowfall of the year,” says Parviainen.
Official first snow is considered to have fallen when there is an intact snow layer of at least a centimeter on the ground when measured in the morning. We might get there as early as Tuesday morning in Kilpisjärvi, says Parviainen.
The rain area will spread to Lapland already on Monday evening, and the rains will continue throughout the night. In most of Lapland, the rain comes as water.
Temperatures in Finland, it is both exceptionally cold and exceptionally warm within a short period of time.
“Now we swing from one extreme to the other,” describes Parviainen.
On the night between Sunday and Monday, there was an exceptionally high amount of frost in Lapland for the time, when the temperature dropped to almost minus 10 degrees in Sodankylä.
On Tuesday, temperatures will be close to zero in northern Finland, but night frosts may still occur.
In the south, on the other hand, temperatures of up to 20 degrees may be reached on Tuesday in the southwest and inland. It is almost five degrees more than the average highest temperature of the day at this time, Parviainen says.
Temperatures of 20 degrees may still be reached in Eastern Finland on Wednesday.
“Climatically, it is quite exceptional that anywhere in Finland readings of 20 degrees are measured at this time of year,” says Parviainen.
In Lapland snow and rain may still occur on Wednesday and Thursday.
In southern Finland, the weather is still quite cloudy on Tuesday. Starting from Wednesday, due to low pressure, the weather will also become unstable in the southern and central parts of the country.
“The whole country will receive rain, and the rain accumulations will be quite abundant by the end of the week,” says Parviainen.
