Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said on Sunday, the 22nd, that if events like the fires ravaging Brazil become recurrent, they will require a specific budget to combat them. “So, the budget will have to include a specific allocation, which may not be necessary today, but which may be necessary tomorrow, depending on the evolution of climate change,” he explained to journalists in New York.
Haddad also once again defended cooperative efforts to combat forest fires in Brazil, similar to what was done during the floods in Rio Grande do Sul. Earlier, he criticized what he called the “push and shove” and said that the best solution is to work together.
In addition, the union of the federal government, states and municipalities can help reduce the costs involved, in his view. In the case of fires, this is even more important because it affects a greater number of states, he said.
“This challenge posed by climate change also requires us to open up a series of opportunities to curb and inhibit this change that is underway,” said Haddad.
The minister also defended the importance of the world finding a global solution. “The world will have to find a solution, because the problem has no borders, it will not respect borders. Global warming is a reality,” he reinforced.
Finally, Haddad said that richer countries will have to make a greater contribution than poor countries in the fight against climate change. “Especially because there are countries that are very indebted,” he said.
