Israelis target Hezbollah-linked areas; one death and at least 17 people injured reported
The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) carried out an attack on Monday (23.Sep.2024) “extensive” in southern Lebanon. The action came shortly after Israel ordered residents in the area to move away from weapons depots and Hezbollah-linked sites. Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported one death and at least 17 injuries.
“We are intensifying our attacks in Lebanon, the actions will continue until we achieve our goal of returning the residents of the north [de Israel] safely to their homes. These are days when the Israeli public will have to show composure.”, he said Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on X (formerly Twitter). He stated that he had called for “an assessment of the situation for home front readiness”.
The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has intensified over the past week. Naim Qasem, the extremist group’s No. 2, said as recently as Sunday (September 22) that the war against the Israelis “entered a new phase”. The statement came after Hezbollah launched 150 rockets into Israeli territory.
The group’s attack was in retaliation for the explosion of pagers in Lebanon (read more about the case below). Hezbollah blames Israel for the attack. Tel Aviv denies responsibility. 37 people died and 2,750 were injured, including Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani.
Israel’s defense minister said operations would continue until it was safe for evacuees to return to their homes in Lebanon. He said Israel was bracing for a prolonged conflict, as Hezbollah has said it will fight until a ceasefire is reached in the Gaza Strip.
IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said Israel will do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of evacuated residents.Hezbollah is putting you in danger. Putting you and your families in danger“, he said.
In another publication At X, Gallant said he had spoken with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.I provided the Secretary with an assessment of the threat situation from Hezbollah and briefed him on IDF operations to reduce Hezbollah’s ability to launch attacks against Israeli civilians. We also discussed the broader regional situation and the threats posed by Iran and its allies.“, he wrote.
Austin, in post in X, he declared to have expressed “support for Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah attacks” and “the importance of finding a diplomatic solution to allow the safe return of Israeli citizens to their homes”.
STF (Supreme Federal Court) Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the suspension of X in Brazil. However, Brazilians abroad continue to have normal access to the platform. This is how this digital newspaper read the messages posted by the Israeli Defense Minister and the US Secretary of Defense and replicates them in this text, as they are of public interest and have journalistic relevance.
PAGERS EXPLOSIONS
A series of explosions of pagers on September 17 and 18 in Lebanon resulted in the deaths of 37 people. The Lebanese government and Hezbollah accuse Israel of being responsible for hacking the devices, which were used by members of the extremist group.
You pagers are devices used to receive alerts and short messages. They are still used for communication in places because of their reliability, although the proliferation of cell phones – and later smartphones – has reduced their circulation.
The use of the analog communicators was recommended by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in February to avoid tracking by Israel, according to the state agency Al Jazeerafrom Qatar, and the Irna, from Iran, these devices contained explosive charges of less than 50 grams. The Lebanese government advised the population to immediately dispose of the pagers.
