Digital Foundry has published a video analysis of the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivornoting how the compromises made to bring the game to older-gen consoles are far too marked, albeit to a lesser extent on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, with some not insignificant issues that impact the overall experience.
What immediately catches the eye is the image quality due to the lower resolution. PS4 runs at a native resolution of 720p versus the 1224p of the PS5’s Quality mode, causing issues with some details and the definition of the protagonist’s hair and beard. On Xbox One it drops to 576p, further amplifying these problems.
The ones are also bad loading timeswhich allow you to take a coffee break in peace. For example, if on PS5 it takes just 10 seconds to perform the initial loading of Koboh, on PS4 it takes over 2 minutes. As if that wasn’t enough, on old-gen consoles you have to wait 10 – 15 seconds to switch from an outdoor setting to an outside one, such as the Pyloon saloon.
15fps effects and big drops in footage
On the plus side, according to Digital Foundry, on PS4 and Xbox One Star Wars Jedi: Survivor maintains the good things it has to offer in terms of the physics system, the details of the game world and the post-processing effects. It’s a shame about everything else: the quality of the textures, lighting, density of vegetation and shadows is clearly lower. Added to all this is a marked pop-in effect of the assets and some visuals and menus running at 15fpscreating a rather unpleasant effect.
Speaking of performance, the game runs at 30 fps on all older-gen consoles. Digital Foundry speaks of a generally solid framerate on PS4 in combat, but with occasional framepacing issues, screen-tearing, and sudden drops. However, Drops in the 20fps range were also noted in the footagewhich apparently also create problems with the audio department. Similar problems were found on Xbox One, but more accentuated, especially in cutscenes, which makes it the worst console to play Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on.
On PS4 Pro and Xbox One X the framerate is more stable and convincing. There is also a significant improvement in image quality thanks to the higher native resolution, respectively 864p and 900p. In general, the “pro” versions are also the only ones among the old-gen ones that Digital Foundry would feel comfortable recommending to gamers.
