Abu Dhabi (Al Ittihad)
Ahmed Al Shamsi, Al Ain team supervisor, confirmed that “Al Zaeem” achieved a great accomplishment for the country, by defeating Auckland City of New Zealand 6-2, in the first round of the Confederations Cup, and qualifying to face Al Ahly of Egypt in the second round of the tournament on October 29 at Cairo International Stadium.
“The victory over Auckland is a joy for the nation and an important victory. Not everyone was reassured at first with the announcement of the formation that included reserve players, but we have great faith in the team and the capabilities of our distinguished players. They must take the opportunity. The substitutes were up to the occasion and presented a great match. This is evidence of the recruitment that Al Ain has benefited from in the past period, and they are all at a high level,” Al Shamsi said.
“The big win is an achievement for everyone, and we want to complete the tournament in the best possible way. Our next goal is bigger, which is a characteristic of big clubs,” he added. “The ages of the players ranged between 19 and 23 years old, and most of the squad was young, which is a low rate in football, in a competitive continental match. However, the coach and the players’ goal is clear, which is not to relax in the most difficult moments of the match, and to win and qualify, especially in the face of a respectable team, but it is unknown, and we only have a little information about it, so the match was difficult, but we respect all the teams.”
Regarding the match against Al Ahly in Cairo, he said: “It will be a tough competition against the African champion, and we must believe in our abilities and players, and the capabilities of the Al Ain team. Of course, it is a tough match against a tough competitor on its home ground and among its fans, and we promise everyone that we will spare no effort in raising the name of the Emirates, and it is an honor for everyone, and there will be a challenge in the upcoming rounds of the tournament.”
