It is basically just a pro forma vote – but after the experience of 2021, it is more important than ever: the CSU voted unanimously for the CDU leader’s candidacy for chancellor.
Munich – As expected, the CSU leadership is united behind the candidacy of CDU leader Friedrich Merz for chancellor. The board voted unanimously by a show of hands for the personnel decision, which the leaders of the two sister parties, Merz and CSU leader Markus Söder, had already agreed on last week. The German Press Agency learned this from participants. “I am fully behind this,” Söder said, according to reports.
With this demonstrative unity, the CSU wants to support Merz in order to increase the Union’s chances of success in the federal election on September 28, 2025. In the 2021 election, there were major disagreements between Söder and the then candidate for chancellor, Armin Laschet, which ultimately led to the Union losing a massive number of votes and squandering its chance of winning the election.
Merz – like all other Union chancellor candidates before him – is dependent on the support of Söder and his CSU in the upcoming election campaign.
In surveys, the Union is currently far ahead of all other parties with values between 32 and 35.5 percent. The three traffic light parties SPD, Greens and FDP together only have 29 to 30 percent, with the FDP even having to fear for its return to the Bundestag with 4 percent in the surveys. dpa
