After the FDP’s heavy losses in the state elections in Brandenburg, the Bavarian FDP leader is calling for an exit from the traffic light coalition.
Munich – After the state election in Brandenburg, the SPD can breathe a sigh of relief. The party with top candidate Dietmar Woidke wins just ahead of the AfD with gains. It remains to be seen whether which coalition could be formedThe election went differently for the Greens and the FDP, neither of which is represented in the state parliament. The first voices from the FDP are calling for consequences at the federal level after the elections. Bavaria’s FDP leader Martin Hagen is calling for the Liberals to withdraw from the federal government.
Brandenburg election: Bavaria FDP leader calls for end of traffic light coalition
Hagen told the Augsburg General on Monday (23 September): “If you realise that it is no longer possible, then at some point you have to be prepared to pull the plug.” He stressed that it was time to speak plainly in the Federal Executive Board: “We have to speak frankly in the Federal Executive Board,” he said with regard to the meeting on Monday.
Hagen noted that the FDP has suffered defeat in every state election for the past three years and has been “punished in every state election.” However, he made it clear that this was not due to the work on the ground. He explained that citizens reject the traffic light government and are making this “unmistakably clear.” The Bavarian FDP leader stressed: “Germany needs a turnaround in economic and migration policy, which does not seem possible with this coalition.” He added: “This cannot continue.”
Another defeat for the FDP: Coalition partner calls for “autumn of decisions”
The FDP clearly failed to gain entry into the state parliament in Brandenburg and is now only listed among the other parties. The FDP was also unable to overcome the five percent hurdle in Saxony and Thuringia. The FDP also suffered losses in the state elections in Bavaria last year and failed to gain entry into the state parliament again with a result of three percent, in which Hagen was the top candidate.
After the election in Brandenburg, FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai called for an “autumn of decisions” on issues such as the economy and migration. Deputy party leader Wolfgang Kubicki thought it was possible that the coalition would collapse soon. “The decisions will be made this autumn and I don’t think that, given its current performance, this coalition will make it to Christmas,” said Kubicki.
