Over|Pauli Aalto-Setälä and Susanne Päivärinta, who sit on Yle’s supervisory board, propose the abolition of supervisory boards.
Yleisradio congressional members of the supervisory board Pauli Aalto-Setälä and Susanne Päivärinta propose the abolition of the supervisory boards of state-owned enterprises occupied by politicians and “sharpening of owner control”.
In the MPs’ statement, it is stated that the supervisory councils do not decide on anything, “but are an old way of the country that should be abandoned”.
“Representative Aalto-Setälä and I have sat frustrated for a year on Yleisradio’s supervisory board. There is no decision-making power and no real opportunities to control the company’s board. We like to present audience figures at meetings, but when we’re talking about financial figures, it’s hard to get them,” Päivärinta writes in the press release.
“Yle’s supervisory board is like a goat guarding the cabbage patch. MPs should not sit there at all, because there are many connections between politicians and Yle that erode independence. In several European countries, efforts have been made to ensure independence in such a way that politicians do not act as supervisors like we do in the supervisory board,” states Päivärinta.
Their in his opinion, the supervision of Yleisradio should be transferred to an external and independent entity in Finland as well. According to Aalto-Setälä and Päivärinna, this could be Traficom or the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority, as Medialiitto has also proposed.
“In general, the primary goal of the state’s ownership policy and ownership management should be the development of companies and increasing shareholder value,” they state.
The MPs have submitted a written question about the status of the supervisory boards of state-owned companies.
