A human rights report revealed the documentation of 2,500 violations committed by the Houthi group against the people of the capital, Sana’a, during the past two years, 2022 and 2023.
The report issued by the Human Rights Office in Sana’a yesterday stated that the documented violations amounted to 14 types, distributed between killing and injuries, assaults by torture and kidnapping, looting of public and private property, recruitment of children, violations against childhood and women, forced displacement, and attacks on judicial institutions.
The report documented the killing of 38 civilians, including 20 cases of killing under torture and 18 cases of killing by direct gunfire, while injuries and physical assaults amounted to 261 cases, and 284 cases of kidnapping and enforced disappearance, and 251 cases of torture and cruel and degrading treatment were documented.
The report pointed to the growing popular anger in the capital, Sana’a, against the Houthis, and their policy of starvation, oppression, and systematic impoverishment of citizens, their continued looting of employees’ salaries, militarization of life, restrictions on freedom of opinion, expression, and public freedoms, and targeting of the republican system.
The Director of the Human Rights Office in the Capital Secretariat, Fahmi Al-Zubairi, confirmed that the Houthis’ continued commission of violations and their ingenuity against the Yemenis is evidence of the group’s inability to subject the Yemeni people to its sectarian project, according to what was reported by the Yemeni News Agency “Saba”.
In the same context, the Equality Organization for Rights and Freedoms confirmed yesterday that it had documented the kidnapping of 33 civilians by the Houthis during the past few days in areas under their control, against the backdrop of their call to celebrate the anniversary of the September 26 Revolution.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Dr. Badr Abdel Aati, renewed Egypt’s support for legitimacy in Yemen and the independence of state institutions, and its firm support for Yemen’s unity, independence and territorial integrity. During his meeting in Washington with US Special Envoy to Yemen Tim Lenderking, the Egyptian Foreign Minister pointed out that the security and stability of Yemen, as well as the Red Sea file and the safety of maritime navigation in it, represent a top priority for Egyptian national security and the security of the Arab region and the Red Sea region, explaining the direct link between the security of the Red Sea and stability in the Horn of Africa region.
The official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tamim Khalaf, stated in a statement that Minister Abdel Aati affirmed during the meeting Egypt’s support for all efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, in accordance with the Gulf Initiative and its executive mechanisms, the outcomes of the Comprehensive National Dialogue Conference, and Security Council Resolution 2216, in a way that meets the aspirations of the brotherly Yemeni people and ends their humanitarian suffering.
