Former Chief of Staff claims Israel’s war in Gaza is a “genocide” and says the Brazilian government should not interfere in Venezuela
The former Minister of the Civil House Jose Dirceu (PT) said that the Palestinians have the “sacred right” of “to rise up in arms against the Israeli occupation”. The PT member defended the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and stated that the conflict in Gaza is a “genocide” against the Palestinians.
“Lula is absolutely right [em definir a guerra de Israel em Gaza como genocídio]. There is no reason for us not to speak out clearly. What happened there was and is a genocide, a war of extermination. […] The Palestinian people have the right to rise up in arms against the Israeli occupation. They have the right. Sacred.”he declared in an interview with the newspaper S.Paulo Newspaperreleased this Sunday (22.Sep.2024)
Asked about the death of innocent people in the attack by the extremist group Hamas on October 7, 2023, José Dirceu states that the act must be condemned. “And I condemned it. All war crimes must be condemned.”he said.
The former minister stated that he had the same opinion about Israel: “Just because there was a Hamas attack doesn’t mean you have to agree with the policies that Israel is pursuing today. In fact, the world no longer agrees with them. Not even the Americans, who are the main financiers and who ensure that Israel can survive, agree with what Netanyahu is doing.”
Brazil vs Venezuela
Regarding the elections in Venezuela and Brazil’s relationship with the neighboring country, Dirceu states that it is necessary to preserve the diplomatic tradition and “avoid informal diplomacy, WhatsApp and press conferences”. According to the former minister, to help Venezuela, Brazil needs to have interlocutors for Lula in the country and interlocutors for Maduro in Brazil to seek “progressive consensus”.
Dirceu said he did not have enough elements to “to believe” in the results of the elections in Venezuela, but stated that Brazil needs to distance itself from the case.
“I have no evidence to say whether I believe it or not. But I will say the following: Maria Corina [líder de oposição ao governo] is far-right. After they lost the election, it wasn’t that they were repressed. The truth is that they tried to subvert, as they have tried before. I think Brazil needs to have a more detached attitude.”he declared.
