A survey commissioned by the American channel NBC News and published this Sunday (22) indicated that the vice president and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris achieved a 5% advantage in voting intentions over the Republican candidate and former president, Donald Trump.
There are 49% of voting intentions for Harris and 44% for Trump, and 7% who are undecided or intend to vote for neither.
The poll, conducted between September 13 and 17, surveyed 1,000 voters and also asked them their opinions of each candidate. Kamala Harris, who was viewed favorably by only 32% in a previous poll in July, now has 48% approval ratings. It is the biggest jump in popularity of a politician since President George W. Bush after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, says NBC.
Trump has also seen a slight increase in positive ratings in the interim, from 38% to 40%. “Harris also has an advantage over Trump because she is seen as competent and efficient, and as having the mental and physical health to be president,” NBC said of respondents’ opinions. “Still, Trump has significant advantages on the economy and inflation, although those advantages are smaller than they were when Joe Biden was still in the race,” the outlet said.
Voters ranked inflation and the cost of living as the most important issue for them (28% listed this as their top concern). Next came “threats to democracy” (19%), “immigration and the situation at the border” (14%), “jobs and the economy” (13%) and abortion (6%).
The poll’s margin of error is three percentage points. The US presidential election will take place on November 5.
