The President participated in the Future Summit, a session without great relevance in which heads of state spoke for up to 5 minutes; the plenary was not full and at the time of the Brazilian there were at least 60 unoccupied seats
The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) exceeded this Sunday (22.Sep.2024) the time allowed for speeches by heads of state at a pre-General Assembly event of the UN (United Nations), in New York – which will be held on Tuesday (24.Sep). According to the rules of the meeting, the authorities had 5 minutes to speak. If they exceeded the time, the microphone would be muted.
At the “Summit of the Future”, hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the PT member’s microphone was turned off when he reached the speaking time limit, in accordance with the rules of the event. Lula was speaking at the time about the underrepresentation of countries from the Global South in multilateral organizations. “in a manner consistent with its current political, economic and demographic weight”.
The President of the 79th General Assembly, Philemon Yangfrom Cameroon, tried to alert the PT member, who continued his speech even without the microphone. The translation, which had also been interrupted, returned at the end of the speech. As soon as he finished, Lula slammed both hands on the pulpit.

This Sunday’s session was held in the format “fire drip” (rapid speeches) in which heads of state from countries of varying importance followed one another. Before Lula, the presidents of Sierra Leone (West Africa) and Yemen (Middle East) gave speeches and also had their microphones silenced for exceeding the speaking time limit. In all, 81 state authorities spoke and several also exceeded the correct time.
The meeting, preliminary to the 79th General Assembly that will open on Tuesday (September 24), approved the Pact for the Future, a document that presents commitments to changes in the multilateral system, including topics such as sustainable development, peace, international security and reform of the UN Security Council. As the official event has not yet started, many delegations did not attend the Future Summit. The auditorium at the UN headquarters, which has a capacity of 2,000 seats, was partially occupied. According to the angle the Poder360 noted, at least 60 delegation seats (yellow tables) were free.
