Mexico City.- Mexico City Police began to seal off the Chamber of Deputies with checkpoints and metal fences more than two meters high ahead of Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration as President and to also guarantee the safety of the guests, including 16 Presidents, on October 1.
Together with security personnel from the Chamber, members of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) have surrounded the main entrances to the Venustiano Carranza Mayor’s Office with metal fences, like those used in 2006, during the inauguration of Felipe Calderón and in 2012, during that of Enrique Peña Nieto.
Last August, there was also a smaller operation against protests over judicial reform. The streets Congreso de la Unión, Emiliano Zapata and Eduardo Molina, which surround three sides of the building, were blocked with metal barriers and only pedestrians were allowed to pass through.
Behind the Chamber, the intersection of Sidar and Molina was completely blocked with trucks, as was the Zaragoza diagonal and the Ciprián bridge.
The workers of the Judicial Branch of the Federation, affected by the reform approved a few days ago so that Ministers, Magistrates and Judges are elected by popular vote, agreed yesterday to extend their strike beyond the day of Sheinbaum’s inauguration. Sixteen foreign leaders have confirmed their attendance at the ceremony, in addition to the wife of the American Joe Biden, Jill Biden. Among the presidents who will attend are Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from Brazil; Luis Alberto Arce, from Bolivia; Gabriel Boric, from Chile; Gustavo Petro, from Colombia; Miguel Díaz-Canel, from Cuba; Bernardo Arévalo, from Guatemala; Xiomara Castro, from Honduras, and Santiago Peña, from Paraguay. In addition, representatives from 105 countries and 22 international organizations.
