Libertarian Secretary and Brother Karina Milei and Minister Patricia Bullrich are also targets of action; tension grows between the countries
Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab he requested on Wednesday (18.Sep.2024) the arrest of the president of Argentina, Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanaza, right), the secretary of the Argentine presidency and sister of the libertarian, Karina Milei, and the Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich.
According to the Venezuelan Public Prosecutor’s Office, the measure is a response to the seizure of a Boeing 747 from Emtrasur (a subsidiary of a Venezuelan state-owned company) by Argentina and its transfer to the United States. The US Department of Justice claims that the plane was acquired by the company in a deal with Mahan Airan Iranian airline sanctioned by Washington DC, which would violate US law.
At the time, Venezuelan airspace was closed to Argentine aircraft and to those whose destination or origin was the country. Caracas also stated that Buenos Aires’ action was a “criminal act” of “piracy and theft”accusing the government of being “neo-nazi”.
In a statement from the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, released on Wednesday (September 18), the government repudiated the arrest warrants against the Argentine authorities. It stated that the handover of the plane was a decision of the courts based on an international agreement and not of the Executive Branch, headed by Milei. Here is the full of the statement (PDF – 143 kB, in Spanish).
Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino has expressed support for the targeted Venezuelan authorities. She said the arrest warrant is “coward” and accused President Nicolás Maduro (United Socialist Party of Venezuela, left) of tyranny.
“Full support to the president, Karina and Patrícia in the face of the cowardly request for their arrest by the dictatorship in Venezuela. Maduro shows once again that he is a tyrant and that we are on the right side of history.”he declared.
VOLTAGE
The action by the Venezuelan Public Prosecutor’s Office marks a new chapter in the tensions between the government of Nicolás Maduro and Javier Milei, who are declared opponents.
On Tuesday (17th September), the Justice of Argentina analyzed the testimony of Venezuelan citizens allegedly persecuted by the Chavista regime.
In the Argentine justice system, an arrest warrant could be issued against Maduro and 30 other allies, including the Venezuelan Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, the “right-hand man” of the Chavista leader.
