The action was reportedly carried out before the president gave up his re-election bid; FBI says it was an attempt to influence the elections
Iranian hackers sent emails containing stolen material from the campaign of former US President and Republican White House candidate, Donald Trumpfor people linked to Joe Biden’s campaign (Democratic Party) before the current US Chief Executive gave up seeking re-election. The information was released on Wednesday (18.Sep.2024) by FBI (US investigative agency), by ODNI (acronym in English for Office of the Director of National Intelligence) and by Cisa (US Cyber Defense Agency).
In a joint statement (fullin English – 116 kB), the agencies said the action represents an attempt by Tehran to “sow discord” and influence the American electoral process.
According to the agencies, “Iranian malicious cyber actors“sent emails at the end of June and beginning of July”unsolicited to individuals then associated with the campaign” from Biden. These emails contained an excerpt from a document “stolen and not public from the campaign” by Trump.
Biden dropped out of the race for re-election on July 21. The Democratic Party’s candidate for the White House is Vice President, Kamala Harris.
“There is no information indicating that these recipients responded.”, the agencies stated. According to the statement, Iranian hackers have been sending “stolen and non-public material associated with former President Trump’s campaign” for US media companies.
“This malicious cyber activity is the latest example of Iran’s multi-pronged approach, as noted in the August joint statement, to foment discord and undermine confidence in our electoral process.”, reads the note.
“Foreign actors are increasing their election influence activities as we approach November [quando ocorre o pleito nos EUA]. In particular, Russia, Iran, and China are all trying to exacerbate divisions in U.S. society for their own benefit, and they view election periods as moments of vulnerability. Efforts by these or other foreign actors to undermine our democratic institutions pose a direct threat to the United States and will not be tolerated.”, the note concludes.
A spokesperson for Kamala Harris’ campaign told the outlet Reuters that he is not aware of any material sent directly to him or other members of the Democratic committee.
Iran’s permanent mission to the UN in New York said the US agencies’ accusations were “unfounded and totally inadmissible”. Iran said that “has no motive or intention to interfere in the US elections”.
