The Argentine government repudiated this Wednesday (18) the decision of the Venezuelan Public Ministry to process a request for an arrest warrant against its president, Javier Milei, for the case of the Venezuelan-Iranian plane detained in Buenos Aires in 2022 and sent to the United States in February of this year.
“The Argentine Republic repudiates the arrest warrants issued by the Attorney General of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela against the President of the Nation, Javier Milei, the General Secretary of the Presidency, Karina Milei, and the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, as a result of the incident involving the Emtrasur company plane,” the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
According to the Milei government, “the aforementioned case was resolved by the Judiciary, an independent power over which the Executive cannot and should not interfere in any way, in application of an international agreement”.
“The Argentine government reminds the Venezuelan regime that in the Argentine Republic the separation of powers and the independence of judges prevail, something that unfortunately does not occur in Venezuela, where they are controlled by Nicolás Maduro,” the statement added.
In statements broadcast on Wednesday by the state channel VTVVenezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced that two specialized prosecutors “are processing the arrest warrant” against Milei, her sister Karina and Bullrich.
He claimed that, in the case of the plane, which was “completely dismantled” in the United States, the crimes of “aggravated robbery, money laundering, unlawful deprivation of liberty, simulation of a punishable act, unlawful interference, rendering the aircraft useless and criminal association” were committed according to Venezuelan law.
Saab also announced the appointment of a “prosecutor specialized in the protection of human rights to carry out the corresponding investigations” against Milei and Bullrich for the “actions committed against the Argentine people” and stated that “we could be facing serious violations of human rights that could constitute crimes against humanity”.
The prosecutor, who called Milei a “fascist” and a “neo-Nazi,” said that in Argentina there is a “premeditated program of institutional violence” against its population and called the Argentine president “the most ferocious violator of human rights on the continent” and “a brutal danger to the entire hemisphere.”
This month, Argentina’s Foreign Ministry asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to request an arrest warrant for dictator Nicolas Maduro and “other leaders of the regime” due to the worsening situation following the country’s presidential elections on July 28.
