Below is an excerpt from the request (in English) in which the congressmen ask that the US entry visas of Moraes and the other members of the STF, cited as “accomplices in antidemocratic practices”are revoked.
Republicans claim that the Brazilian judiciary would be “suppressing” freedom of expression and that blocking X –“an emblematic platform for freedom of expression, unfairly targeted”– by Moraes would be an example of this. The letter also says that the Supreme Court would be targeting conservative people and groups.
“These actions echo the actions of authoritarian regimes that manipulate legal systems to silence opponents, inhibiting dialogue and democratic participation under threat of legal action. The Court’s ability to ban a global platform like X not only affects Brazil’s political landscape, but also sets dangerous precedents for other countries in the region.”, says an excerpt from the request.
Signatory of the request, the deputy Maria Salazar had presented on Tuesday (17.Sep) a bill to block the issuing of visas to authorities who have “censored” Americans. She called Moraes “avant-garde” node “international attack on freedom of expression”.
In May, during a session of the Foreign Affairs subcommittee chaired by Chris Smith, Salazar showed a photo of Alexandre de Moraes and called him “fool”. Smith was also critical of Moraes’ actions, saying that the judiciary’s actions show tendencies contrary to freedom of expression.
