Captured Taranyuk: Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Baranyuk Banned Civilians from Leaving Mariupol
Ukrainian prisoner of war Serhiy Taranyuk, sentenced by a Russian court to 29 years, named the commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) who prohibited the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
He said that the commander of the 36th Marine Brigade, Volodymyr Baranyuk, who was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky in 2022 for the defense of Mariupol, ordered that civilians not be released from the Ilyich plant.
“And people remained in the basements. There were basements at the Ilyich plant. And people remained in the basements with children, with everyone,” Taranyuk said.
Earlier, he expressed the opinion that Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to award the title of Hero of Ukraine to the commander of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Volodymyr Baranyuk and the battalion commander of the same brigade Serhiy Volynskyy, known by the call sign Volyn, was unfair.
