Boxing|Heavyweight champion Usyk was on his way to London to watch Saturday’s match between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois.
Ukrainian champion boxer Oleksandr Usyk37, was taken into custody at Krakow Airport in Poland on Tuesday. Now the reason is clear.
Heavyweight champion Usyk was on his way to London to watch from Saturday Anthony Joshua and By Daniel Dubois boxing match between Poland when his journey was stopped at the airport by the Polish police.
Former wrestler and current member of parliament of Ukraine Zan Belenjuk saw the situation on the spot. The video he filmed shows the police handcuffing Usyk and taking him to the back room.
Usyk was quickly released, and he commented on the situation on Instagram.
“Dear friends, there was a misunderstanding in the situation, which was quickly resolved. Thanks to everyone who was concerned about the situation. Thanks to the Ukrainian diplomats for their quick action,” Usyk wrote.
Usyk’s press officer Mykhailo Krasiuk opened the situation later on Wednesday on the messaging service X.
“It was about a team member who brought Usyk from Kiev by car (and it wasn’t [valmentaja Sergei] From Laplandas reported by some media). He was very tired after 14 hours of driving and literally fell asleep standing up. Ryanair employees did not let him on the plane,” Krasiuk wrote.
“Usyk, who was already on the plane, returned to the departure gate and tried to defend our friend, as he always does. The police showed up and maybe the master looked so dangerous that he had to be handcuffed, I don’t know. However, everything was sorted out quickly. Thank you for your support.”
Usyk won the heavyweight Olympic gold in London in 2012.
The Ukrainian boxer is scheduled to face Tyson Fury in a rematch on December 21. The fight between the two in May ended in Usyk’s favor.
