The German Baltic coast has a lot to offer holidaymakers. However, one peninsula is off-limits. There, German history catches up with the present.
Dortmund – Anyone looking for a holiday on the German Baltic coast has countless options. However, one spot on earth is excluded from this. On this peninsula, the rule is: “No entry!” Anyone who ignores this even risks their life, writes RUHR24.de.
No one is allowed to enter this German island – there is a risk to life
The Wustrow peninsula is idyllically situated in the Bay of Lübeck in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The popular Baltic Sea resort of Rerik is not far away and holidaymakers do not need to travel far to reach the cities of Wismar and Rostock. Actually, these are ideal conditions for a holiday destination, when the beaches are not threatened by an algae plagueHowever, the peninsula may only be entered accompanied.
The reason for this lies in German history. Wustrow is a former military site. For decades, first the German Wehrmacht and then the Soviet military held maneuvers there.
German Baltic Sea peninsula banned for holidaymakers – life-threatening danger
The Soviet Army blew up many buildings and facilities, leaving only a few houses standing. The result: legacy waste, such as ammunition and houses in danger of collapsing, remained.
In 1993, the last soldiers left. A real estate company bought the island and closed it to the public in 1998. Wustrow was supposed to be prepared for tourist use, but nothing has happened so far (more Holiday and travel tips at RUHR24).
Wustrow Peninsula on the German Baltic coast: guided tours possible again
Since 2018, however, a little has been happening. Guided tours are again possible from the Baltic Sea resort of Rerik. In around an hour and a half, guides lead groups through the former residential area – a covered wagon ride is also offered.
In addition, a ship always sails along the shore of Wustrow. The story of the “forbidden peninsula” is told. And perhaps Wustrow will be opened up to tourism at some point. But for now, nature is enjoying this wild spot on the German coast.
