Radiation|However, the concentrations are so small that they are not harmful to people or the environment.
Finland there is slightly more radioactive cesium in the outdoor air than usual, announced Radiation Protection Center (Stuk) on Wednesday. However, the concentrations are so small that they are not harmful to people or the environment.
Radioactive cesium is commonly detected in the outdoor air of Finland, as fallout from the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine is still in the soil.
According to Stuk, the higher-than-usual concentrations observed now may originate from wildfires in Ukraine. The fires there have released radioactive substances into the air.
Slightly elevated concentrations of cesium-137 have been detected at all eight collection stations in Stuk. The southernmost stations are in Helsinki and Kotka, the northernmost is in Ivalo. Similar cesium observations have been made elsewhere in Europe.
