Is it a political trial or a trial with political implications? Former Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, party leader of the right-wing nationalist Lega and Transport Minister in the current Meloni cabinet, is to be sentenced to six years in prison according to the wishes of the Palermo public prosecutor. The prosecutors accuse Salvini of depriving the 147 boat migrants rescued from distress on board the Spanish rescue ship Open Arms of their freedom by ordering the port closure and of being guilty of abuse of office. With their demand, the public prosecutors stayed below the possible maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for the crimes in question.
